Group 8 Assessment Resources

A core strategy of great teaching is using great assessment resources to know what your students have mastered and what needs to be remediated. 

In Group 8, this is even more crucial as students prepare to take their FBE exams at the end of the school year. This leaves no room for error. Students must get used to the feel and format of the exams. Our Mathematics and Science full colored assessment booklets provide that feel. They are aligned and structured to provide valuable information on student acquisition of knowledge during the school year. The specially designed questions allow for the implementation of data driven instructional techniques that have been shown to be effective at improving student achievement.

Contents

1. Exams 1 and 2: contain questions related to FBE standards 1 and 2. Here the student's skills in number sense, whole number operations (including problem solving) are assessed. To remain on track for proper FBE exam preparation, these should be administered in August and September.
2. Exams 3 and 4: measure students ability in FBE mathematics standards 1,2,3, and 4. In addition, to the topics assessed in Exams 1 and 2, student's skills in tables, graphs, data, and decimals will also be assessed. Teaching should aim to have students master these topics by October to November in order to remain on track for the FBE exams
3. Exams 5 and 6: include fractions, percents, probability, and ratios and proportions with the topics previously assessed. The suggested time for these is December to January.
4. Exams 7 and 8: completes the curriculum (FBE standards 1 - 5)  and now includes questions from geometry and measurements. At this point students should be showing greater flexibility in their thinking as these exams imitate the actual FBE exam. The suggested time frame for Exams 7 and 8 is February to April.

Contents 

1. Exam 1: covers the earth and space science topics in the FBE science curriculum. The questions cover the weather, water cycle, structure of the earth and solar system topics. These topics should be thoroughly covered by October.
2. Exam 2: contains questions from the life science portion of the FBE curriculum. The questions assess student knowledge of plants, animals, humans and the environment. To remain on track for the FBE exams, knowledge of these topics should be assessed by January.
3. Exam 3: assesses students knowledge on physical science concepts. Questions in this exam cover matter, energy, force and motion. This assessment should be given by the end of March.
4. Exam 4 and 5: cover the complete curriculum. The questions allow students to show their knowledge of the complete curriculum and these exams should be administered in final months leading up to the exam

These assessments allow you to know what students know before they take the actual exam. Therefore, providing valuable information that inform teaching and lesson preparation. Anyone using these testing materials are cautioned about using them in isolation. To be effective, they must form part of an overall school-wide strategy.
